Deep Dive Issue: FCC’s Discontinuance NPRM
This presentation will take a deeper dive into FCC’s Discontinuance NPRM. On July 25, 2025 the FCC issued a proposed rulemaking to streamline and/or eliminate discontinuance rules which currently protect customers from harm when their local carriers— like Verizon— discontinue basic services in order to modernize networks (or in some cases improve profits).
Since the alarm industry relies on local communications in order to connect customers to central stations, the lax regulation of carrier discontinuances raises distinct issues of life safety, both for home invasions and fire and health monitoring protection.
The current rule making proposes to make it easier for carriers like Verizon and ATT. The potential changes could bring drastic results from almost no notice of carrier discontinuance.
